Lamine Yamal Names the Top Favorites to Win the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Lamine Yamal believes Spain has what it takes to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but he also acknowledged several other national teams as serious contenders for football’s biggest prize.
The young FC Barcelona star spoke to FIFA ahead of the tournament that will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Yamal explained that being considered favorites does not guarantee success on the pitch. He pointed to Spain’s triumph at UEFA Euro 2024, saying nobody expected them to lift the trophy at the time.
According to the 18-year-old winger, the strongest candidates to win the 2026 World Cup include:
Argentina
France
Portugal
England
Spain
Yamal praised Spain’s football system and youth academies, calling them “the best in the world” for producing elite talent and shaping the national team’s playing style. He added that winning the World Cup would be “a dream come true.”
The Spanish youngster also addressed comparisons with football legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, saying his goal is not to be compared to them, but rather to have his own name mentioned alongside theirs in football history.
