Mbappé Opens Up on Real Madrid, Vinícius, Yamal and Mourinho
Kylian Mbappé has opened up about his life at Real Madrid, his ambitions with the Spanish giants, and his relationships with some of football's biggest names.
In an exclusive interview with AS, the France captain discussed his long-awaited move to Madrid, his experience at the Santiago Bernabéu, his relationship with club president Florentino Pérez, and his ambitions for the years ahead.
Mbappé: Real Madrid Was Always the Dream
Mbappé said playing for Real Madrid was a childhood dream and described the club as a unique place for any player hoping to leave a mark on football history.
After moving to Spain, he said he found a level of calm and happiness that he had been missing previously. He also praised life in Madrid and the support he has received from fans across Spain.
For Mbappé, playing regularly at the Santiago Bernabéu remains a special privilege because of the stadium's history and the expectations surrounding every match.
Florentino Pérez and the Move to Madrid
The French forward also spoke highly of Florentino Pérez, explaining that the Real Madrid president had remained in contact with him for many years.
Mbappé made it clear that he never needed to be convinced to join Real Madrid. The decision, he explained, was always about timing and whether the circumstances were right.
His message was simple: when a move cannot happen at a particular moment, a player has to accept it and look forward rather than remain focused on the past.
Working With Mourinho
Mbappé has worked with several high-profile coaches during his career, including Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso, Arbeloa and now José Mourinho.
He described Mourinho as an exceptionally intelligent leader and an important figure in football. Mbappé said that working with different managers has allowed him to learn different approaches to the game.
The French striker also rejected the idea of setting himself a specific goal for the number of goals he must score this season. Instead, he wants to focus on helping Real Madrid in every match.
Vinícius, Bellingham and Yamal
Mbappé explained that Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham offer different qualities on the pitch, meaning his connection with each player can work in different ways.
He also praised Lamine Yamal, describing the Barcelona youngster as a highly talented player with the potential to enjoy a major career.
Rather than focusing on comparisons between individual stars, Mbappé emphasized the importance of the team and the collective objective at Real Madrid.
The Ballon d'Or Is Not His Main Focus
The Ballon d'Or was another topic discussed during the interview.
Mbappé said his responsibility is to perform on the pitch, help his teammates and give voters reasons to consider him. However, his bigger ambition is collective success.
He wants the prestigious individual award to return to Real Madrid, while making clear that winning trophies with the club remains a major priority.
Lessons From the World Cup
Mbappé also reflected on France's defeat against Spain at the World Cup.
He acknowledged that France did not execute its game plan well enough and admitted that falling behind against a team capable of controlling possession made the situation even more difficult.
For Mbappé, the defeat was a missed opportunity, but he believes France can create new opportunities in the future.
Looking Ahead to the Madrid Derby
With the Madrid derby approaching, Mbappé highlighted the intensity and importance of the fixture.
He enjoys playing away from the Bernabéu and believes such matches demand personality, sacrifice and commitment from the players.
Real Madrid's objective is to maintain its winning momentum and continue competing for trophies.
His Message to Real Madrid Fans
Mbappé understands the high expectations surrounding Real Madrid and the frustration supporters may feel after a trophyless previous season.
However, he believes success will require unity between the players and the fans.
His message to supporters is one of ambition and togetherness: Real Madrid will need the strength of the Bernabéu and its supporters if the club is to challenge for every major trophy.
