Lamine Yamal Breaks His Silence on Racism at the Bernabéu
Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has opened up about the racist abuse he experienced during a Clásico at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu, saying that racism is something he has faced many times throughout his career.
The young Barcelona winger spoke about the issue during an upcoming appearance on Universo Valdano, where he discussed his experience of discrimination in football and reflected on the incident that occurred during the Clásico on October 26, 2024.
During the interview, host and former Real Madrid player Jorge Valdano asked Yamal whether he had ever personally experienced racism.
Yamal responded that he had experienced it “a thousand times,” explaining that racism is not always expressed through direct insults.
According to Yamal, certain comments, reactions and looks can also carry racist undertones, sometimes without the person making them fully realizing it.
What Happened at the Bernabéu?
The incident Yamal referred to occurred during the 2024 Clásico at the Santiago Bernabéu.
After Barcelona scored, Yamal and teammate Raphinha were reportedly subjected to racist insults from sections of the stadium. The incident attracted widespread attention and prompted action from Spanish football authorities.
Yamal explained that he was particularly surprised by the reaction to his response at the time.
He made clear that being called Black was not, by itself, what upset him. Instead, he emphasized that the problem was the insulting and degrading way the word was used against him.
Yamal's Message
The Barcelona youngster also explained that he did not want to allow the abuse to affect his performance on the pitch.
For Yamal, supporters had paid to watch a football match, and he did not want to let one person's behavior distract him from his responsibility as a player.
His comments highlight the complicated nature of racism in football and the importance of distinguishing between someone's identity and the discriminatory way in which that identity can be used as an insult.
Disciplinary Action After the Incident
Following the incident, LaLiga reported the matter to Spain's National Police.
Real Madrid also launched an internal investigation, which identified a minor as being involved in the racist abuse.
Spanish juvenile authorities later imposed a 12-month ban preventing the minor from entering stadiums hosting official football competitions. The punishment also included 30 hours of community service and a formal apology to the player.
A Wider Issue in Spanish Football
Yamal's comments have once again brought the issue of racism in football into the spotlight.
The Barcelona star has become one of the most recognizable young players in world football, and his experience illustrates that discrimination remains an issue that football authorities, clubs and supporters continue to confront.
His decision to speak openly about the incident also adds another perspective to the ongoing discussion about racism, respect and the behavior of fans inside football stadiums.
